'AN EXPLOSION OF COLOUR' will be held at the auditorium of the San-Fernando Technical Institute on Saturday and Sunday April 26th and 27th 2008. This show will feature small, medium and large exhibits, single entry exhibits, a Photography Competition and a Schools' Art Competition as well as exhibits staged by sister societies, environmental organizations and the Ministry of Agriculture, all displayed within the auditorium. There will also be a program of lectures and workshops on the two show days for the education of both members and patrons. There will be a separate plant sale area. We are appealing to members to bring single entries and plants for display to make this show a grand success. There will be ribbon judging and a prize will be awarded to the Best Novice Display. 665-5919 or Alvin Benjamin- 652-2729. The deadline for booking vending
space is Sunday April 10, 2008. On sale will be orchids, plants and horticultural
supplies. We are appealing to all members to volunteer assistance for the show set-up which starts at 4.00 pm. on Friday April 25th 2008. Assistance is also required on the show days Saturday April 26th and Sunday April 27th 2008 for the Show Entrance and Sale of tickets and for the Information Booth. George Black 1915-2008 We deeply regret to inform you of the death of Mr. George Black on Friday February 22nd 2008 in the United Kingdom. George Black was born in Trinidad in 1915 and migrated to the UK with his wife Josephine in 1971. While resident here George was a President of the Trinidad and Tobago Orchid Society and as a prolific hybridizer, he was made an honorary member of the Trinidad Orchid Society in 1971. In the UK
George continued his hybridization particularly in the Oncidinae and Zygopetalinae.
He created at least 15 new hybrid Genera. He was a member of the Royal
Horticultural Society Orchid Committee (Judge) for 25 years. Georgeblackara
Tribute commemorates his tremendous contribution to orchidology during
his seventy-six years of active interest in this group of plants. Our sympathy
goes out also to the relatives of Ian Mc Donald upon his recent death.
Ian was a long standing member of the society and was a prolific grower
of orchids maintaining a large collection of orchids at his home.
